In this image the big star represents the mother, the golden star the baby. The bright gold inspires a fresh start, illuminates and brings hope. The surrounding stars are us, the communities of people in which these two, we all, are embedded. We choose stars because this is inclusive— all humans are made of the same stardust. Starlight, because our mission is to raise awareness, to bring these mothers and babies who are cast in society’s blind spot into the light. The vast majority of our clients are in custody for non-violent drug-related crimes. Incarceration is not improving their lives or helping them, their families or our society with the underlying problems that have brought them to this place. In order to come up with new and innovative ways to improve lives and our strengthen communities we need to recast our gaze collectively, to collect our light and surround the most vulnerable among us with a compassionate, hopeful, healing alternative to the punitive approach.
